腳踏車自行更換後齒輪

我的腳踏車是21速的，後齒輪的比例是一般外面最常見的那一種，在平路的時候，時速到40幾腳的轉速就挺快的，很快就喘。之前後齒輪壞掉去換新的，看老闆把後輪卸了，拿一根中空的圓柱體塞進齒輪中間連接花鼓有個圓的洞，然後板手轉一轉齒輪就被轉下來了。我想說自己買一個比例比較小的7速後齒輪，再買那個拆齒輪的工具，看看要去哪裡換哪一種齒輪，自行組裝，而且應該不用換變速器吧，調一調變速器，然後上路，各位大大請問這樣可行嗎??謝謝^^
