國際評級機構標準普爾 (S&P) 警告，馬來西亞家庭負債比率正在逐漸升高，以目前經濟狀況來看，雖仍處可控制狀態，但若是該國經濟成長率一旦放緩，負債問題恐加劇。

《The Star Online》報導，世界銀行 (World Bank) 在一項研究報告中發現，在亞洲新興國家中，馬來西亞與泰國的家庭負債占國民生產毛額 (GDP) 比率相對偏高。

大馬目前家庭負債占 GDP 比率為 80%，恐促使當局祭出抑制信貸成長的政策。標普公司上 (11) 月下修大馬當地銀行的評等，理由為擔心房價升溫速度加快與家庭債務上升，上述兩種情況若再不加以修正恐造成經濟失衡。
 
標普公司常務董事 Ritesh Maheshwari 表示，泰國與馬來西亞目前經濟表現狀況都算不錯，但萬一全球經濟狀況走弱，影響到馬來西亞經濟狀況，家庭債務比率偏高問題就會慢慢浮現到檯面上。
