【簡嘉宏╱綜合外電報導】美國女子梅森（Martha Mason）在11歲時罹患了「脊髓灰質炎」，從此必須躺在約2公尺長的人工呼吸器（俗稱鐵肺）中，只能露出頭部。
 
但梅森並不因老天對她開了玩笑而自暴自棄，她不但完成高中學業，還可以主辦趴踢。梅森的哥哥也罹患同樣的病症，在梅森11歲時過世。梅森在紀錄片中表示，「我常想當我爸媽知道我得了和我哥一樣病症時，他們有多難受」。梅森在2009年過世，享年72歲。
 
按：鐵肺是一種協助喪失自行呼吸能力的病人進行呼吸的醫療設備，使用者大多為罹患脊髓灰質炎和重症肌無力等病的病患，這些病症讓患者負責呼吸的肌肉麻痹，因此需要藉助外力進行呼吸。
