7、8月是盛夏酷暑的季節。台北7月中旬已飆到37.8度的高溫，上看40度應該是有可能的！談論「天氣」是在國際職場裡，打開話匣子最好的方法。尤其當你的外國客戶在台灣往來穿梭談生意時，你在本地氣候方面的資訊，最能幫助他們。請看以下關於氣溫的報導：

The temperature in Taipei set a new high for this year when the mercury hit 37.8 degrees at 12:15 PM Sunday.（週日中午12點15分，當溫度落在37.8度時，台北市氣溫達到今年的新高點。）

句中的mercury原是指「水銀」，但是因為溫度計裡的銀色液體即為水銀，所以現在mercury都被指為「溫度」。值得注意的是句中high的用法，我們常用的high是它形容詞的用法，表示「高的」；但是此句的set a new high for this year（到達今年的新高點）之中，high是名詞的「最高點」、「最高水平」。不妨利用今年的「高溫」，來學一下high的形容詞與名詞、以及副詞highly的用法。

high：形容詞

高的（離地面）；好的、高的、超乎尋常的（數量、數字、品質、標準、水平）

例句：

We have several high shelves for the exhibition.（我們有幾個高的架子可供展示用。）
The cost of living in the capital area is pretty high.（在首都地區的生活費水平相當高。）
The high crime rates here prevented people from residing.（這裡的高犯罪率使人無法定居。）

注意，形容「人」或動植物細長的東西，不要用high而用tall。

high：名詞

最高點、最高水平；用在氣象報告上則是指「最高溫度」。

例句：

We can expect occasional showers in the north with a high of 33 in Taipei.（預計北部地區偶有陣雨，台北最高溫度33度。）
The price of gold reached a twenty-year high this month.（黃金價格在本月達到了20年來的最高點。）
Highs of 42 degrees were recorded in the southern part of this island.（在這個島的南部地區記錄到的最高溫達42度。）
