[分享] Halloween是萬聖節前夕，不是萬聖節！ 有小孩子在問：「為什麼萬聖節不叫做萬魔節？為什麼萬聖節的裝扮都是妖魔鬼怪，而看 不到聖人的模樣？」，這個問題很好，點出了長年以來的翻譯錯誤。 台灣大部分的民眾（甚至包括媒體）並不熟悉西方宗教的節日，便以訛傳訛把 Halloween 翻譯為萬聖節，導致一個號稱是「萬聖」的節日卻只看得到一群裝扮成魔鬼 、「不給糖就搗蛋」 的小朋友；而被大人裝扮成妖怪的小孩們，也不明就裡地以為 Halloween 就是萬聖節。 事實上，11月1日才是「萬聖節」，10月31日的 Halloween 應該翻譯成「萬聖節前夕」 或是「萬聖夜」才對。 10月31日，也就是西方的 Halloween，我發現有許多人，包括電視新聞報導，都將這一 天叫做萬聖節，其實這是錯誤的。 Halloween應該是「萬聖節前夕」，而真正的「萬聖節 」應該是十一月一日，英文叫做 Hallowmas。 Hallow 是一個動詞，是「使神聖」的意思，而een是一個副詞，和even同義，也就是晚上 的意思，在古詩裡常可見到evenfall(黃昏)這個字，而我們常說的evening，也就是從 even變化而來的（不過even在現代英文中已很少被當作夜晚的意思，而多用eve取代之） 。 因此，Hallow-een 就是「使神聖的夜晚」，而翌日11月1日才是萬聖節（英文稱作 Hallowmas 或是 All Saints' Day）；在天主教裡，還有一個萬靈節（All Souls' Day ）是在11月2日。 -- http://mail.tku.edu.tw/cfshih/ln/ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.228.79.9
