一名在阿富汗戰爭中失去雙足的英國士兵將參加素有『地獄障礙賽』之稱的斯巴達越野賽。斯巴達越野賽一般在英國鄉間舉行，比賽包括了過泥地、跳冰坑、爬吊繩和跳火圈一系列殘酷的挑戰。據報導，這名退伍士兵名叫詹姆斯·辛普森，今(2013)年27歲，在阿富汗巡邏時踩上了一個簡易爆炸裝置，雙足、雙手嚴重受傷。手術後，他只能戴上假肢生活。

據新華網報導，辛普森將參加9月8日在英國北約克鎮舉行的一項斯巴達越野賽。參賽者必須穿過25道障礙、跑完5公里賽程，才能完成比賽。組織者形容參加這項賽事是『純粹的、原始的瘋狂』。據報導，辛普森將是參加斯巴達越野賽的第一個雙截肢者。目前，辛普森正在教練的幫助下，在家附近的叢林裡為這項賽事努力訓練，叢林裡仿照斯巴達越野賽設置了各種陷阱。

辛普森說他希望能夠依靠自己的力量完成比賽，而不是依靠團隊幫忙克服障礙。『不管花上10分鐘還是30分鐘，我都會一個一個親自跨過障礙，』他說。
